Do I need Claude?
For the AI routing, yes — an Anthropic API key (pay-as-you-go, yours) powers the receipt reading and categorization. Everything else — entities, ledger, reports, tax math, exports — works with no key at all.
Where does my financial data live?
On your machine, in your browser, in a vault you can export as one file. We never see it. We couldn't sell it if we wanted to, and we don't want to.
Doesn’t Claude count as a server?
Yes — Claude runs on Anthropic’s computers, under your account and your agreement with them. The boundary is this: Funance itself transmits nothing. The math runs in the app on your machine, and the Card is optional. What you choose to paste into your own Claude goes to your AI provider the way a file you email your accountant goes to your accountant — to someone you chose, never to us. Skip the Card entirely and nothing leaves your machine at all. Either way, there is no Funance server.
Do the terms stack?
No — a term is a window, not a balance. Each key counts its days from the moment it is issued, whether you open the app or not, and a new key replaces the one you hold. Take the month on the 1st and it runs to the 31st; take the next when that one is about to end, not before. When a term ends the paid rooms close, the Free Ledger stays open with everything you entered, and the next key opens the rooms again. The Free Ledger itself has no clock at all.
What happens if I cancel?
There is nothing to cancel — nothing auto-renews and no card is on file. A term simply ends on its date. When it does, the paid rooms close and the Free Ledger stays open with every line you entered, every report and every export still yours, on your machine. Take another term and the rooms open again; don’t, and nothing is ever deleted.
Can it replace QuickBooks?
For the solo, multi-entity founder — yes, and now it invoices too. A/R with printable invoices, bill tracking, recurring charges, and a mileage log are built in, on top of the CPA-ready reports; your CPA still does the filing. Payroll and warehouse-scale inventory/COGS stay on the big rigs.
Is there a refund?
No — and here is why, plainly. Your key is signed once and verified on your own machine; nothing phones home, so a refund could not lock the rooms — the key would keep working to its date. Rather than sell you a promise the app cannot keep, there are no refunds: the Five Minutes is the trial — every room, free, before a dollar — nothing auto-renews, and a chargeback ends the licence. Statutory rights, where your law provides them, are unaffected.
I don’t own a business — I manage a budget. Is this for me?
Yes, and it’s one of the best fits. Set your department, program, grant, classroom, or project up as an entity, leave the tax rate at zero, and everything else works exactly the same: money in and out, categories, month and quarter closes, spreadsheets for whoever asks, and a written summary from Claude when you need to explain the numbers rather than just list them. The tax instruments simply sit unused.
Does it handle my state’s taxes?
Funance is bookkeeping and estimation — not tax preparation, and it never files anything. It doesn’t carry fifty states’ rules, and deliberately so: those change every year and a stale number in your software is worse than no number. Instead you set a blended tax rate per entity (federal plus your state — your CPA gives you the figure), tag each entity with its state, and Funance does the arithmetic, the quarterly countdowns, and the Schedule-C-mapped binder your accountant files from.
How do updates work?
Editions ship quarterly. Your year is your year — every Year license gets its next four editions from its own purchase date, so there’s nothing to prorate. When an edition ships you’ll get an email, and your original download link serves the new files.
